Virginia has been approved as an early-window state in the 2028 Democratic presidential nominating calendar, giving the commonwealth an expanded role in the next presidential primary.
The Democratic National Committee’s full membership approved the move during the DNC’s Summer Meeting in Austin, Texas, following a recommendation from the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee.
Under the approved calendar, Virginia’s presidential primary would be held Feb. 29, 2028.
But the date is not yet final under Virginia law. The General Assembly will need to pass legislation changing the state’s presidential primary date before the commonwealth can hold its primary on Feb. 29.
DPVA Chairman Sen. Lamont Bagby said the decision will give Virginia voters an early voice in the presidential nominating process.
“We are proud that Virginia has earned a place in the early window of the 2028 Democratic presidential primary,” Bagby said. “Virginia reflects the geographic, economic and demographic diversity of our country, and this decision ensures Virginians will have a meaningful voice early in the presidential nominating process.”
Bagby said Virginia Democrats will run a process that allows candidates to engage directly with voters across the state.
“Virginia’s place in the early window will ensure Virginians have a crucial role from the beginning and give candidates an early opportunity to be tested before a broad and diverse electorate,” he said.
