A new poll commissioned by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee shows Republican Rep. Rob Wittman and his Democratic challenger Shannon Taylor essentially tied in Virginia’s 1st Congressional District.

The poll, which was conducted Sept. 15-17 among 519 likely general election voters, found Wittman with 47% support and Taylor with 46%, while 7% were undecided. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.3 percentage points.

The DCCC’s analytics department conducted the survey, so as I say with every internal poll I cover, take the results with a grain of salt.

The poll also found President Donald Trump with a 37% job approval rating in VA-01, compared with 55% of respondents who disapproved. Overall, respondents in the survey voted for Trump by 2 percentage points in 2024, while the sample identified as R+7.

The DCCC said the results show a competitive race for Wittman, who has represented the district since 2007. The committee also pointed to Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s 2-point victory in the district in 2025 as evidence of its changing political makeup.

Taylor, Henrico County’s commonwealth’s attorney, is seeking to unseat Wittman in a race that has drawn significant national attention as Democrats look for opportunities to gain seats in the U.S. House.
