John Curran announced Monday that he is launching a write-in campaign for lieutenant governor after failing to secure enough signatures to make the Republican primary ballot.
Curran’s spokesperson told Elizabeth Beyer from Cardinal News that an individual did not turn in thousands of signatures because that individual alleged that Curran did not pay them for their services.
This is not the first accusation of failure to pay for services that Curran has faced this year.
Conservative talk show radio host John Fredericks said Curran did not pay him for ads that he placed on Fredericks’ radio shows.
“I’ve been on the air for 14 years, and we have never been misled on political ads payment the way GOP candidate for LG John Curran has done,” Fredericks said in a Facebook post. “Political ads are pre-paid. For a week he told us it was being paid the next day and ended up stiffing us for $2,000 after a week of ads he recorded in our studio and booked. “
Additionally, Curran’s former campaign manager is using legal action to try to get wages that they were owed, according to legal documents obtained by Virginia Scope.

Notice of Legal Claims on Behalf of Britton Ross
Protected Communication
Dear Mr. Curran:
My law firm has been retained by Britton Ross (“Ross”) to represent her in connection with her claims for nonpayment by you and your campaign under the Independent Contractor Agreement (“Agreement”) made between you and Ms. Ross on December 20, 2024 for Ms. Ross to provide services as your Campaign Manager in exchange for scheduled payments. A copy of this agreement is attached.
Ms. Ross has not received over $18,000 in payments under the Agreement that she is otherwise contractually entitled to.
Mr. Curran repeatedly indicated that payment would be forthcoming, including the text message below from Mr. Curran to Ms. Ross:
Payment has still not been received. Mr. Curran has reportedfinancing of $1,000,000 to the Curran for Virginia campaign(see records at https://www.vpap.org/candidates/456381/elections/). Records of the disposition of this funds would be logged by the campaign pursuant to Virginia Code § 24.2-947.3. As we understand, the Curran for Virginia campaign has not spent anywhere near $1,000,000 on other expenditures to date. Mr. Curran has no valid excuse for failing to pay Ms. Ross her owed compensation.
According to VPAP, Curran raised $645 for his campaign in 2024. However, he gave his campaign a personal loan of $1 million.
When asked to comment, a spokesperson for John Reid, the Republican nominee for lieutenant governor, said: “Who?”
