The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) announced Wednesday that they are putting a spotlight on Democratic lieutenant governor nominee Ghazala Hashmi’s race.
Hashmi is running against the Republican nominee, John Reid, for the role of overseeing the state Senate and casting tie-breaking votes.
The DLCC typically focuses on legislative races, like the 100 House seats up for election in November. They are putting emphasis on the lieutenant governor race in part because of the tight 21-19 majority the Democrats have and the position’s role in breaking tie votes.
“The DLCC is focused on using every tool at our disposal to ensure state legislative Democrats in Virginia have the power to fight back against Trump and Washington Republicans’ reckless agenda,” said DLCC President Heather Williams. “Along with defending our majority in the Virginia House, it is imperative that we elect Senator Hashmi this November to ensure that Virginia’s next Lieutenant Governor will use their power, including the power to break ties in the Virginia Senate, to stand up for all Virginians.”
Hashmi expressed her thanks and the importance of potential tie-breaking votes.
“The commonwealth deserves a lieutenant governor who brings Virginia values to the critical role of breaking ties in the state Senate,” Hashmi said. “It’s past time we bring compassion and common sense back to this office, especially as we face the devastating effects of the Trump administration.”
