NORFOLK, Va. — Former Del. Jay Jones is launching the first television ad of the Democratic primary for attorney general on Tuesday.

“As a lawmaker, I protected abortion rights, and as an Assistant Attorney General, I took on big corporations, and I sued Glenn Youngkin to defend voting rights,” Jones says in the ad.

The spot highlights Jones’ work from 2023, when he represented the Virginia NAACP in a lawsuit seeking access to a database used by Gov. Glenn Youngkin to decide whether to restore voting rights to individuals with felony convictions.

According to the campaign, the ad will air across the Richmond, Norfolk, Roanoke and Washington, D.C. media markets. It marks Jones’ first television buy, with additional ad placements coming, according to his campaign.

Jones is competing with Henrico Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor for the Democratic nomination.

Taylor, elected Henrico’s top prosecutor in 2011, has emphasized her experience as a career prosecutor, while Jones has leaned on his legislative and civil rights background.

Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares faced no primary challenges for the GOP nomination as he seeks a second term in office.

Early voting is underway. Election Day is June 17.
