The Democratic Attorneys General Association is investing $1 million in Jay Jones’ campaign. This is just an “initial” investment, DAGA said.
“The time to elect a Democratic attorney general in Virginia is now, and DAGA is proud to announce our initial investment of $1 million in the Jay Jones campaign to make that happen,” said Sean Rankin, the president of DAGA.
Jones is running against Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares, who is seeking reelection to a second term.
“Virginia needs an attorney general like Jones who will hold Trump accountable for his unlawful actions,” Rankin said. “With so much at stake, it’s vital we take back this seat in November, and we’re committed to working with Jones to make that happen.”
Miyares is running on preventing crime and has attacked Jones since he became the nominee last week.
In a statement, minutes after Jones won the primary, Miyares released a statement saying the Democrat would make “Virginia families less safe and our streets more violent,” as attorney general.
Jones responded in an interview with Virginia Scope, saying “I think safe communities is something that everybody can agree on.”
“I’ve got two young children, and I want them to grow up in safe communities like every other family across Virginia,” Jones continued.
Miyares’s campaign released a new ad on Wednesday, calling him the “people’s protector” for helping law enforcement deport criminals.
The ad comes as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is operating in Chesterfield, detaining individuals when they show up to court to settle fines.
Miyares spoke about the ICE actions in Chesterfield following a press conference on Tuesday.
“These are overwhelmingly individuals [who fall into] one of two categories,” Miyares said. “One, they’re here illegally, they’ve committed violent felonies. Or two, I would remind my friends in the press, there are 1.4 million illegal immigrants that have already had a deportation hearing. In other words, they’ve already been in front of a judge. A judge already heard their case, adjudicated the case and said, ‘you can’t stay in this country.’”
Jones has not publicly commented on the ICE situation.
