A new poll of Democratic voters in Virginia’s newly proposed 6th Congressional District shows former Rep. Tom Perriello leading Del. Sam Rasoul, D-Roanoke, and former journalist and author Beth Macy in the primary race. The results also show strong support for declaring Israel’s actions in Gaza a genocide.
The poll was sponsored by Unity & Justice Fund.
Perriello received 34% of respondents’ support, ahead of Rasoul at 15% and Macy at 12%. Perriello and Macy have officially announced their candidacy, but Rasoul has yet to join the race.
The race narrowed after respondents were given information about each candidate, with Perriello receiving 37% of the vote and Rasoul 27%. Macy stayed at 12%.
Despite Perriello’s lead, the poll indicates the race remains fluid, with 35% of respondents undecided.
The poll also explored voter attitudes toward the war in Gaza, an issue that has increasingly divided Democrats nationally. A majority of respondents, 84%, said they believe Israel’s actions in Gaza constitute a genocide.
