Sen. Louise Lucas, D-Portsmouth, one of Virginia’s most powerful Democratic lawmakers, has endorsed Rep. Abigail Spanberger’s campaign for governor, signaling peace in the valley for Democrats moving forward.

Lucas had previously expressed skepticism about Spanberger’s candidacy. She was among those encouraging Rep. Bobby Scott (D-3rd) to launch a campaign for governor, arguing that Spanberger had not done enough to connect with Black communities across the state. Scott ultimately decided against entering the race, and Spanberger became the Democratic nominee.

“It is time we had a Governor who will improve our public schools, keep Virginia affordable and protect the progress we have worked so hard for,” Lucas posted on social media Monday night. “I am endorsing Abigail Spanberger because she is the candidate who will fight alongside us and deliver for all Virginians.”

Lucas’ endorsement now gives Spanberger a boost heading into the general election, especially in consolidating support among the party’s core constituencies.

Lucas, who serves as president pro tempore of the state Senate, is known for her fierce political style and influence within Virginia’s Democratic politics. Her public backing of Spanberger signals that the Democratic Party is all on the same page: winning in November.

The unity from Lucas and Spanberger stands in sharp contrast to the Republican side, where party leaders are grappling with the fallout from a controversy involving Republican lieutenant governor nominee John Reid.

Spanberger is running against Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, who was also unopposed for the Republican nomination.

Earle-Sears is the first woman of color to hold statewide office in the commonwealth. She was elected in 2021 alongside Gov. Glenn Youngkin and is known for her outspoken conservative views.

Spanberger and Earle-Sears are facing off to become the first female governor the commonwealth has ever had.

The race is also expected to draw national attention as both parties look to test their messaging ahead of the 2026 midterms. With two high-profile candidates on the ballot, the 2025 Virginia gubernatorial election will likely be the most closely watched gubernatorial contest in the country.
