The “Vote Yes” on redistricting campaign is launching a new TV ad featuring Gov. Abigail Spanberger urging Virginians to vote in favor of the redistricting referendum.
The commercial will air across Virginia as part of a 7-figure ad buy.
Democrats want to redraw Virginia’s congressional boundaries to give them more seats in Congress.
Currently, Virginia’s congressional delegation consists of six Democrats and five Republicans. The proposed map would likely result in 10 Democrats and 1 Republican.
Democrats say the change would be temporary until 2030, when the bipartisan redistricting commission will redraw the lines again.
Democrats also say that this is a response to President Donald Trump asking conservative states to redraw their lines to give Republicans more seats in Congress.
“It’s directly in response to what other states decide to do — and a president who says he’s, quote, ‘entitled to more Republican seats’ before this year’s midterms,” Spanberger says in the ad.
Election Day is April 21. Early voting is already underway.
