Walter Curt Jr., the man who first published allegations that employees of Fairfax County Public Schools assisted students in getting abortions without their parents’ knowledge, has familial ties to Gov. Glenn Youngkin, Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears and Attorney General Jason Miyares.

His father, Walter Curt Sr., is a big donor to Youngkin and Earle-Sears. He has given Youngkin $225,000, Earle-Sears $86,000, and Miyares $20,000.

In 2022, Youngkin appointed Curt Sr. to the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.

Shortly after Curt Jr. posted on his blog, the WC Dispatch — which is based in Ohio — about these allegations against FCPS, Youngkin directed the Virginia State Police to investigate the accusations.

Curt Jr. confirmed that Sr. is his father and said it has no impact on his work as an investigative journalist.

“I’m not affiliated with any of the Republicans in VA,” Curt Jr. said when asked by Virginia Scope. “I’m a completely independent investigative journalist. My platform and work speaks for itself, which is why it all has extensive research and receipts attached with anything I publish.”

Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell, D-Fairfax, said the connection between the Curts and Republicans raises further concerns about the validity of the allegations against FCPS.

He told Virginia Scope that the discovery that Curt’s family has given large amounts of money to statewide Republicans is cause for additional scrutiny of the allegations.

The Youngkin administration said the insinuation that these allegations were intentionally leaked through a blog is “absurd.”

“The only allegation worth talking about is the one being investigated by the Virginia State Police: that a Fairfax County school official allegedly arranged for a student to have an abortion, paid for it with school funds, and then the school or school division covered it up,” said Youngkin’s press secretary, Peter Finnochio.

The timing of when officials in Fairfax and the state government were aware of these alleged incidents, which Curt Jr. wrote happened in 2021, has been a question circulating. Right-wing accounts on social media have accused both FCPS and Youngkin of knowing about it for years.

The governor’s office told Virginia Scope that he was first made aware of the allegations when Curt Jr. published his story.

The superintendent of FCPS, Michelle Reed, said in a letter to families that she learned about the allegations earlier this month.

Virginia Scope sent a Freedom of Information Act request to FCPS asking for any communications about any investigations into these allegations, internal or external, between March 1, 2025, and August 13, 2025.

FCPS declined to give Virginia Scope the records requested.

“Records responsive to your request are entirely withheld because their release is prohibited by law, and/or Fairfax County Public Schools is exercising its discretion to withhold the records in accordance with VFOIA,” they said in their response. “Specifically, the records that are being withheld relate to personnel information. The School Division is withholding records responsive to your request pursuant to Va. Code § 2.2-3705.1(1).”

Virginia Scope then followed up and asked for the number of records that FCPS is withholding, which they are required by law to disclose.

They declined to provide the number.

“The records you are seeking are a part of an ongoing investigation and a reasonable volume of records cannot be estimated at this time,” FCPS wrote. “When the investigation is complete these records will likely be withheld due to the personnel exemption cited in the previous email, Va. Code § 2.2-3705.1(1).”

  1. I find it curious that the lede is about the familial ties to the Governor, etc. instead of Fairfax County PS refusing to answer requests for information and going to extreme lengths to deny access to that information. So, Mr. Curt has a father who knows the people in the VA executive branch. That surely is a damning expose’. Anything to obfuscate the real story.
