While national Democratic groups flood Virginia with money in support of the redistricting referendum, a coalition of progressive organizations says millions of dollars tied to allies of President Donald Trump are being spent to influence Virginia’s upcoming election, as they denounce what they describe as deceptive mailers targeting Black voters.

New Virginia Majority, the Virginia League of Conservation Voters, CASA in Action, Progress Virginia, Freedom Virginia and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia released a joint statement Wednesday criticizing mailers they say are being distributed by the “NO” campaign to Black voters across the state.

“Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans are hellbent on pursuing a national power grab, and are now spending millions of dollars spreading misinformation across Virginia to buy this election,” the progressive groups said in a joint statement. “But our communities have fought too long and too hard for the right to vote to allow that history to be twisted and weaponized in this way.”

“We are voting YES, and we are encouraging Virginians to do the same by April 21 to stop Trump’s power grab and level the playing field.”

Democrats in Virginia have received more than $20 million from national groups in support of the “Vote Yes” campaign.

The $2.5 million donation to the Republican effort comes after calls from state-level Republicans for more national support.

“They have seemed to be very focused on making sure that the Epstein files were not released… they had plenty of time and effort to spend on that,” said state Sen. Glen Sturtevant, R-Colonial Heights, when pleading for more support to fight the referendum.

Election Day is April 21.
