Petersburg Police released a statement Monday morning giving an update on the Sunday night fire that took place in the Goodwill on Crater Road.

According to police, they were called to the Goodwill for reports of an individual starting a fire inside the building while it was closed. Fire crews responded alongside the police officers.

Once on the scene, first responders discovered that the fire suppression system in the building successfully extinguished the fire.

A suspect was still on the scene and was subsequently arrested. Jonathan Phillips, age 23, was charged with arson and destruction of property. Police officials say that more charges are pending.

“Our Petersburg Retail Store and Donation Center will be CLOSED on Monday, November 2nd,” said Goodwill officials in a statement. “Donors and shoppers are encouraged to visit our Colonial Heights and Iron Bridge retail stores. Visit goodwillvirginia.org/location-finder for directions.”

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Phillips is being held without bond until a court appearance. We will update this article when we have more details.
